We begin by scheduling a consultation with one of our Skin Care Specialists to discuss your individual goals and develop a personalized treatment plan. Electrolysis is suitable for all hair types and colors. Due to its time consuming nature, it is typically done on small areas but can be done anywhere on the body. During the consultation, we will assess the most appropriate course of treatment for your needs. You will be asked to complete a medical history form, which will be reviewed by our Physician Medical Director to identify any potential contraindications for LHR or electrolysis. After your consultation, you will have the opportunity to schedule your LHR or electrolysis appointment, based on the treatment plan developed for you.
Proper hydration is essential for a more comfortable and effective electrolysis treatment. Drinking plenty of water for at least 24-72 hours before your appointment helps keep the skin hydrated, which enhances conductivity and minimizes discomfort during the procedure. Dehydrated skin can be more sensitive, making the treatment feel more intense. It’s best to avoid caffeine and alcohol before your session, as they can contribute to dehydration and increase skin sensitivity.
For the best chance of targeting hairs in the anagen (growth) phase, it's generally recommended to shave 3–5 days before your electrolysis session. This timing allows some hairs to start emerging from the follicle in early anagen, making them more effectively treated. However, avoid shaving on the day of your appointment, as the electrologist needs some visible hair to properly treat the follicle.
On the day of your electrolysis appointment, make sure the treatment area is clean and free of lotions, oils, or heavy makeup. Wear loose, comfortable clothing to prevent irritation on the treated area, especially if targeting larger body areas. If you have sensitive skin or prefer additional comfort, you can apply a topical numbing cream such as 5% lidocaine about 45 minutes before your appointment. To maximize its effectiveness, cover the area with plastic wrap to prevent the cream from drying out before treatment. Taking these steps will help ensure a smoother, more comfortable experience.
During your electrolysis session, the electrologist will begin by cleansing the treatment area to ensure it is free of oils and bacteria. A fine, sterile probe will then be inserted into each hair follicle, delivering a small electrical current to destroy the hair root and cut off the blood supply so that the hair cannot return. The level of discomfort varies depending on individual pain tolerance and the treatment area. If a numbing cream was applied beforehand, it can help reduce sensitivity. Open communication with the electrologist is encouraged, and we will do everything possible to ensure the client is as comfortable as possible. While some redness and minor swelling are normal immediately after treatment, these effects typically subside within a few hours.
After your electrolysis session, it's important to follow proper aftercare to promote healing and prevent irritation. Some redness and mild swelling are normal and should subside within 2-24 hours depending on each individuals skin. To soothe the skin, apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer or aloe vera gel. If necessary you may apply a cold water compress or ice pack to the treated area to alleviate any discomfort or swelling.Avoid touching, scratching, or picking at the treated area to prevent infection and scarring. For the next 24-48 hours, keep the area clean and avoid excessive heat, including hot showers, saunas, and direct sun exposure. Refrain from using harsh skincare products like retinal, exfoliants, or makeup on the treated area until the skin has fully calmed.
For optimal results, consistency is essential. Electrolysis requires multiple sessions to effectively treat all the hair in a given area, as hair grows in different cycles. It’s important to schedule follow-up treatments usually every 2 weeks to target hair at various stages of growth. As your treatment progresses, the number of hairs requiring removal will decrease, and the sessions will become shorter and less frequent. Skipping sessions or waiting too long between treatments can lead to less effective results, as some hairs may not be in the right growth phase. By staying consistent with your treatment plan, you'll achieve smooth, long-lasting results over time.
